What to Keep and What to Throw Away

What to Keep and What to Throw Away

When relocating to a new home, most people use it as an opportunity to declutter by getting rid of items they don’t need. Tossing an item, whether by throwing it away or donating it, can be very fulfilling. Some people even use this as an opportunity to make some extra cash that they can use to facilitate the move. For instance, you can collect all those items and hold a yard sale to sell them. This especially works if you have lots of items which are usable and quality but you really don’t need them.

Get rid of double items

Before you put any item in the moving box, you need to ask yourself some important questions. Do I really need it? Will it fit in my new home? Do I have another item that fulfills the same purpose? One of the best items to get rid of are the ones that you have in multiples. Put the two similar items next to each other and then choose one, get rid of the other. You may want to get rid of the item that you have used most or the one that has been sitting idle for months unused.

Get rid of what you haven’t used recently

You may have items in the house that you really don’t use. For instance, look at the stuff at the back of the pantries or cupboard. They include items like mixers, choppers and blenders. You may have gadgets that have been lying around for months without being used. It’s time to reconsider tossing them away. In fact, if you haven’t used it for the last 6 months, you need to get rid of it. You may also consider getting 3 in 1 appliances that save on space and offer better efficiency.

Getting rid of clothes

A chunk of the items you probably need to get rid of when packing for your move are clothes. If you hold clothes that you haven’t worn for a long time, get rid of them. In fact, you need to hold on to clothes for at least a year. If a year has passed and the clothes are still gathering dust in your closet, you need to get rid of them fast.
The shoes and purses that you never wear also need to go. Think of the many shoes that you have in the same color and style. You don’t need three white summer bags, one is enough. Toss it away and someone who needs it more can make good use of it. If they’re too many, the idea of holding a yard sale can work especially if they are high quality and in good condition. You may also consider donating such items to local charities.

Getting rid of items when you’re moving is certainly a lot of hard work. But it’s doable. Once you’re done, you can begin packing with less items to deal with and only a few things to worry about.
